Lish Dish: Speaking Out... at the Deli? Rock on!
2009-04-07
I really hate going to the grocery. Don't get me wrong, I love food, but I really hate shopping. Period. People who shop hungry are just mean. Mean to people in the aisles and mean to people who work at the store. I came across a woman a couple weeks ago in the produce department who approached a quiet employee restocking apples and asked him if they carried something. He apologized to her and said they didn't carry it. She shouted in the produce department, THIS IS THE WORST STORE EVER! So of course, my partner and I repeated that lovely outburst, loudly, every time we were around her. Hopefully we helped her to realize what an asshole she was. Probably not, but whatever, we felt we were doing our civic duty.
Today, however, I was graced with a much better experience. As I was waiting for my deli meats to be sliced, I heard the employee "Dave" shout out to his employee friend "Matt" - "Hey, Matt, did you hear about Vermont today? Lawmakers overturned the governor's veto and now same sex marriage is legal!" I smiled so big to hear these two talking about this topic with a bunch of customers in line. I just kept thinking this is how things are going to change. We need to keep speaking about these issues in everyday situations so it becomes more natural for people to hear them. I really think a huge momentum has begun and we need to keep it going. I engaged the boys in a brief congratulatory chat on the swing of Vermont and on their candor. I left with a wink and a little spring to my step feeling incredibly hopeful about our future.
I'm in Bloomington, Indiana, which, before this past election, was one, if not the only, blue spot on the Indiana map. Indiana has a long way to go before it's another Vermont, but today it felt like a stepping stone was just placed at the city limits. Baby steps will eventually lead somewhere and I bet the grass is really spongy and green there. Way to go "Matt" and "Dave"!!
