Amy Off-Air: The American Idol is....
2008-05-22
THAT...... is where my TIVO stopped recording last night. Right at 2 hours when Ryan Seafoam (as Mike Myers called him) said "And the American Idol by 12 million votes.... is... David ......(boing)." If you have TIVO, you know the TIVO boing. Ohmigod! What!?!?!? NOOOOOoooooooo. Seriously. I have watched everyone from ZZ Top to rocker nurse to Seal to miss actually hearing the winner????? Kelli and I were trying desperately to make out Seafoam's mouth behind the TIVO screen asking me to either "Save or Delete This Program"....straining to see if his lips were forming ARCH.. ..or COOK. Kelli thought it looked he was about to say Cook. She was right, of course, which we would find out when we went online to READ who had won. I wanted to SEE him win. I had watched SO MANY HOURS of Idol these past months...well actually I fast forwarded through much of it, especially those group numbers which were horrible!) ONLY to MISS this moment of victory.
Why couldn't the stupid producers of IDOL ,who strung us along all these months through many a one hour result's show, get the inevitable announcement made within 2 hours??? That was really ALL they had to do. Read a name from a card. The rest was gravy. And speaking of....George Michael looked like the color of gravy. Whew! He did not look good. His skin was the color of a corpse. I have HDTV. I can tell you it was not right. Having seen the man up close from 5 feet away in 2001, he is beautiful. I guess you have paid the price for your trouble with the law, George, with all of your shenanigans.
So, my disappointment was huge but I finally today watched the last unrecorded 5 minutes of Cook's win. His gracious and gentle moment when he soaked it all in and he cried (real men cry). Also he continually folded his arms throughout the night around Archie, just like a big brother. So beautiful. I found it to be the most touching of any IDOL or reality show "win" I have seen. Unfortunately I had to watch it on a 4 inch web screen. (here I am shaking my fists at IDOL producers)
With the tragic illness of his brother, David Cook has shown grace throughout and also has shown that it is not life or death this show. And I feared Archie might die many a night just getting through it or before the judges' comments. Seriously. He made me nervous. I think the win would have been too much for him. But has a gift from God...or Joseph Smith ...he is LDS, right?
Here is David's......final moment.
Another season over. Time to crown our Windy City Gay Idol now in about 2 weeks. What fun!
